Good point, Alex. There is the possibility for someone to abuse redirected urls.

I think if you are the one generating the link you will be in control of the destination url. Of course the destination url of a site you have no control over can change over time.

Along with the usefulness of URL shortening comes security concerns. You initially don't know what is on the other side of the link, so it could be spam.

Make sure the URL shortnening service allows you to flag spam links (eventually they will get disabled). Some services now have a "see before you click" option. Check you service's FAQs to learn their options.

Hi Erika,

We meet in the strangest places. Below is info from bit.ly. In short, if you have a bit.ly account, you will see all your links listed and you can click the info button..

How do I see how many times a bit.ly link was clicked on?

Every bit.ly link has an Info page that shows the number of clicks and other relevant data.

For example, to get to the Info page for this bit.ly link:
http://bit.ly/CUjV

You’ve got several options:
• Add a “+” sign to the end of the link — http://bit.ly/CUjV+
• Add “/info/” in the middle of the link — http://bit.ly/info/CUjV
• Use the Sidebar Bookmarklet to instantly get Info for your bit.ly link.

How do you then check the results/history of your bit.ly link, as in how many people clicked it?
